What Knitglow does with your data today, in plain words.

Your charts stay on your device

Charts, legends, progress, notes and the pattern image you import are stored in this browser using IndexedDB. Settings such as language and appearance are kept in local storage. Imported files are opened in the browser; only the page you convert is uploaded, as described below. We can't see or recover what is kept in your browser, and clearing your browser data deletes it. So the site can open with no connection, its own files are kept in this browser too; they hold nothing about you.

Chart recognition on our server

On this site, chart conversion runs on the Knitglow server, so it needs a free account. When you build a chart from an import, the app uploads the selected page as a PNG image, together with the grid corners, the stitch and row counts, your legend's symbol names and the sample cells you picked. It doesn't upload the original file, other PDF pages, your progress or your notes. Browsing the gallery, knitting gallery charts, making blank charts and tracking rows need no account and upload nothing.

The uploaded page, the job details and the matching result are linked to your account and stored with Supabase, which hosts our database and file storage. They are deleted automatically after 7 days; only a record that a job ran (its times and status) stays with your account, and it is also how the 3 free conversions a month are counted. The chart you build stays in this browser unless you sync it with Plus.

Helping improve recognition is optional and starts unchecked. Only if you check "Help improve recognition…" for a chart, approving that chart sends improvement samples.

A sample is a small picture (48 × 48 pixels) of one cell, the symbol you chose for it, that symbol's name and meaning from your legend, and the server's original guess with its confidence. We take every cell you corrected and up to 50 you kept, at most 200 per chart. Samples are linked to your account and used only to improve Knitglow's chart recognition. They are not deleted after 7 days: ask us to delete them (see Contact). If your account is deleted, they are no longer linked to it.

Fabric render requests

If you have Plus and request a fabric render, we store a copy of that chart (its size, the symbol in each cell, and those symbols' names and colors), its title and the yarn you picked. They are linked to your account and stored with Supabase. The copy doesn't include your pattern image, notes or progress. A person on our side runs the render on our own computer and can see the chart while doing it. When it's ready, that person may send one email about it to your account's address. We use it only to make the render: we don't publish it or use it to improve recognition.

The chart copy is deleted as soon as the render is delivered or declined. The rendered image, its 3D file and the request record (title, yarn, status, any reason for declining, and dates) stay in your account, private to you, also if Plus ends. To have them deleted, ask us (see Contact). If your account is deleted, they are deleted with it.

Anonymous usage events

These are off unless the site turns them on. When on, the site sends a short event when someone views the gallery or a gallery chart, starts knitting a gallery chart, finishes three rows, comes back on a later day, views the Plus page, presses Subscribe, opens a pattern file to import, gets a converted chart, reaches the monthly free conversion limit, approves an imported chart, comes back from checkout, requests a fabric render, opens the fabric render offer without Plus, opens it on a chart with a symbol that can't be rendered yet, opens a page inside another app's browser (such as Instagram's), or copies its link to open it in Safari or Chrome.

Each event holds only: a format version, the event name, a gallery chart ID (only for gallery charts), the traffic source (a campaign tag or the referring site's host name, never a full address; the first one is kept in this browser and sent with later events), a random ID kept in this browser, and the time.

We store the day, the event name, the chart ID, the source, the random ID and the time it arrived. We don't store your IP address, your browser's user agent or page addresses.

Accounts

Knitting needs no account. If you sign in with an email link or Google, Supabase, our account provider, stores your email address. With Plus, sync is automatic: copies of your charts, with their progress and imported page image, are kept in your account, private to you. They stay there if Plus ends; ask us to delete them (see Contact).

Payments

Knitglow Plus is sold by Paddle.com as the merchant of record. When you subscribe, the checkout sends Paddle your account email and a random account ID so the subscription can be linked to your account. Paddle collects your payment details under its own privacy policy and tells us the subscription's status, plan and billing dates, and your email. We never see your card details.

Fonts and hosting

Pages load fonts from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com, fonts.gstatic.com) and jsDelivr (cdn.jsdelivr.net). Like any web host, these services and our hosting provider receive standard request data such as your IP address.
